Songwriting Prompt: “Pieces Gathered”

Imagine you pull together a collage of random photos — a weathered door, a child playing, a broken mirror, neon signs, someone’s handwritten note, a dim streetlight, a stray cat, parts of a circuit board, cracked pavement — each image telling a fragment of a story. You decide to weave them together into a single song.

  • Pick 3–5 images from that random collage as your starting pieces. It could be literal (you actually pick photos) or imaginative (make them up in your head).
  • For each image, write a short line or phrase that captures what it feels like — not just what you see, but what it might sound, smell, or emotionally evoke.
  • Then link those lines into a narrative — ask: What connects those seemingly disconnected moments? What’s the thread? Is it memory? Loss? Hope? Identity? Time passing?
  • Finally, write a chorus (or refrain) that sums up the emotional pulse of the collage: the tension between disparate pieces and the longing for unity.
